Who will win League 2?

Lawrence Gets Newcastle Defender On Loan!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 06/08/2001

LENNIE LAWRENCE today finally revealed the player he is looking at to fill the gap in the defence by naming a Newcastle United youngster David Beharall - a product of the St James' Park youth system who has captained both the youth and reserve sides but failed to make the first team.

At 6ft 2ins Beherall would add height as well as strength to the squad and although he has made only six appearances for the New castle first team, he is the sort of player Lawrence has been looking for since the departure of Peter Handyside.

Breaking the news today, The Grimsby Telegraph reported that "He will train with the Mariners this week with manager Lennie Lawrence keeping his fingers crossed that the Geordie can plug the gap in defence for their opening day clash against Crewe on Saturday."

With Paul Raven out for a minimum of a fortnight, Lawrence is desperate to bring in cover at the back. "We're having a look at him with a view to a loan," the Town boss told the Telegraph. "He was watched once or twice in Newcastle Reserves last season and I've still got other irons in the fire."

Lawrence also intimated that another player may well be at Blundell Park before the Crewe game. "There may well be another before Saturday. We've got some irons in the fire."

A product of Newcastle's School of Excellence. A local lad who is desperate to make the grade at Saint James Park, but faces tough competition for a starting place. He captained the Newcastle Youth side to the Northern Intermediate League title in 1998, but isn't as big or strong as those ahead of him in the squad.

He has been at the club since he was 14 and would be disappointed to leave the club he supported as a youngster. But perhaps a loan spell with a First Division would benefit both the player and the club. He's quick and he's eager to learn, but he is stood at the crossroads in his career. It would be a shame to see him leave, but that seems inevitable at the moment. He could be one player who could well come back to haunt us.
