Man City Preview

Date: 30/11/2001

SO the cup dream is over after the defeat on Tuesday and for the first time in two and a half months the "Minds on the Cup" excuse cannot be used.

Former Scunny, Liverpool and England legend Kevin Keegan brings his high scoring Manchester City to Blundell Park for one of the ‘biggies’ that we all look for when the fixture list is announced.

The Story So Far

TownMan City

You know the story by know, started well. Cup draw was made, we slipped down the table in a blink of an eye. Now we HAVE t get stuck into the league, no ifs, no buts. This is crunch time. Lennie has said anyone who’s relaxes and costs us points will now be named and shamed. So what was the lambasting of Michael Jeffrey following the Bradford game?

Following the appointment of Keegan in the summer, hope was high at Maine Road. City started like a house on fire with Eyal Berkovic providing the ammunition for Shaun Goater and Paulo Wanchope. Stuart Pearce also marshalled from the back line. Since then the wheels have come off a little bit with City not been able to put a run of wins together but they are still around the danger zone.

Town Team News

Boss Lennie Lawrance decided to rotate his team before the game on Tuesday and will look to rest as many players as he can. Most who will miss out will be through injury though. Alan Pouton and Stacy Coldicott should return, as will Tony Gallimore whilst rookie striker Jonathon Rowan is a doubt. Chris Thompson will be rewarded for his midweek hatrick for the reserves with a place on the bench. Michael Jeffrey should also return to action.

Man City Team News

Captain Stuart Pearce will miss his first game in City colours after pulling his hamstring in the week. Also out is Costa Rican striker Paulo Wanchope whilst Shaun Goater returns and Carlo Nash keeps his place in goal.

Expected Line Ups

TownMan City
Danny Coyne
Once again could be adjudged to be at fault for the 1st Arsenal game but made some excellent saves later in the game.
Danny Butterfield
After a poor performance in midweek he returns to right back, the position where I feel he is best.
Tony Gallimore
Returns from a 3 game absence due to bruised ribs and a suspension. Will slot into the left back spot, kept warm for him Ben Chapman.
Marlon Broomes
Showed his class at Highbury and was most people's MOM, assured display in which he kept Sylvan Wiltord quiet for most of the game and brought the ball forward well.
Paul Groves (c)
Having handled the trick Denis Bergkamp at Highbury he must contain Huckerby and Goater who both have the thing which destroys time and time again.....pace.
Stuart Campbell
Showed his form in glimpses recently but needs to put in a really solid performance that he produced so often last season.
Ben Chapman
Once again occupies a different position, this time down the left flank. Will look to drop back and help the defence rather than attack the City full backs.
Alan Pouton
So sorely missed in London, the No 7 is the key to tomorrow's game and will look the keep Beranbia and Berkovic quiet.
Stacy Coldicott
Like Pouton he was badly missed. Will look to break up every possible move by City.
Phil Jevons
Inevitably the hero turned to villain after his missed volley. Anyhow, will probably start up front. As long as the balls played to feet he’ll be a danger.
Micheal Jeffrey
Returns from a long injury and will be given the task of holding the ball up and bringing the midfield into the game.
Carlo Nash
One time male model, now keeping ‘Dodgy’ Nick Weaver out of the sticks.
Richard Dunne
Former Everton defender who is finally establishing himself in the EIRE squad.
Danny Granville
Ex Leeds and Chelsea defender who has also gained U-21 honours for England.
Lucien Mettomo
Towering player who signed for £1,500,000 in the summer from St Ettiene
Christian Negouai
New signing who scored a controversial goal on his debut against Rotherham and was sent off against Blackburn in the week.
Ali Benarbia
Clever play maker signed from PSG in October and has been a huge hit with the City fans.
Eyal Berkovic
Similar type of player to Bernabia. Notorious for being on the wrong end of John Hartson’s boot in their infamous training ground incident.....OUCH.
Gerard Wiekens
No nonsense Dutchman who is in his 4th season at Maine Road.
Kevin Horlock
Northern Ireland international who can play in the middle or on the left.
Shaun Goater
20 goals already this season and he still wants more! Should captain the side in Stuart Pearces absence.
Darren Huckerby
Ex-Lincoln and Leeds man who made his name at Coventry. Dangerous when running at people with his electric pace. Big favourite of the Kippax.
