Stopping the Rot Part 4

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 13/12/2001

OVER the past two seasons Lennie Lawrence has brought in quite a few loan players. Zhang Enhua, Alan Neilson, David Nielsen, Menno Willems, Knut Anders Fostervold to name but a few.

Home > Features > Loans - Good or Bad

Some of these loanees have scuttled back to their club, tails between their legs after not making an impact and will have to sit in the Danish dug-outs. Others however, have become permanent figures at BP. Stu Campbell, Menno Willems to name just a couple.

However the majority of these loanees and several trialists we have had at BP have been of a good standard and had an immediate impact like Marlon Broomes or Alan Moore but the board and/or LL have been reluctant to make them permanent players at BP.

Whether this is down to money or player demands on many occasions the club have been correct. Take for instance David Nielsen: wow, great goals, ran his socks of against Huddersfield but now at Wimbledon he's an overpaid lazy fringe player. But if we take Stuart Campbell, a shrewd signing. Stu plays consistently and is not a liability.

So as to the title: loans - good or bad. The costs have to be taken into consideration and so do performances but I think that LL has made some very good loan signings in his time here.

The board have no interest in the club! The Chairman when I spoke to him at Bramall Lane said he wasn't prepared to buy Beharall due to £100,000 price tag. My reply (sarcastic) "Why don't you look at Chesterfield their players are going cheap". Chairman: "They're not in our division"

Well what do the board want? We apparently can't afford Prem or Div One players so what the hell are they going to do?

Ian
