Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

A Bitter Swedish Taste

By: Jostein Jensen
Date: 04/01/2002

ACCORDING to sources in Sweden only a week before Lennie Lawrence was sacked by the Mariners the former Town boss was very close to signing up Swedish defender Magnus Samuelsson from top Scandinavian outfit Djurgården IF.

DIF's 30-year-old defender was skipper for the Stockholm's Allsvenska team, but rejected their contract offer at the end of this season, hoping to sign with the Mariners instead. But when Chairman Peter Furneaux and the board decided Lawrence's reign as Grimsby Town manager was over, Samuelsson's swede dreams of a move to Blundell Park were dashed at the same time.

The Swede will now perhaps be following Lennie Lawrence to his new club Cardiff City, or hope that the former Town boss left behind some papers when he departed from his Blundell Park office for the final time last week!

Magnus, who joined Djurgården from Østers in 1999, is a strong player weighing in at 87 kilos (13 st, 9lb) and 182 cm (6'0") in height. After his harmstring problems in 2000, the Swede has been playing in most of the Olympiastadion team's fixtures this year.
