Groves: Every Game Now is a Cup Tie

PAUL GROVES said he was unhappy with the team's first-half performance at Crewe yesterday. An early goal from Crewe’s Geoff Thomas and a penalty given away by Groves himself was enough to give Crewe victory.

"It was a tentative start by us, we still seem to be suffering a hangover from the cup defeat in mid-week," Groves said. "We were too apprehensive in the first 45 minutes and we failed to make any impression on their defence."

"The first goal was a failure by our defence to pick up a lose man from midfield. I have to take responsibility for the penalty when I appeared to lose balance and put my hand up, which the ball struck. I have no complaints."

However, Groves did say he was happy with the loan striker Robert Taylor, who appeared to give the Mariners some extra punch to the attack.

"I was pleased with loan signing Robert Taylor's performance. He offered us a new dimension up front. He brought players in to play and certainly gave us more goal threats."

"Every game now is a cup tie and we have to sit down and see which way we are going. Confidence in the camp is still high but we must battle to the end of the season."
