CHARLTON striker Clive Mendonca has been forced to retire at the age of 33 after receiving advice from the club's medical specialist that an operation required on his hip could leave him with permanent damage and possible disability.
Mendonca, a Grimsby Town hero left Grimsby for Charlton but was dogged with injuries since he arrived there. Clive was hailed as the hat-trick hero of the Addicks' 1998 play-off final win over Sunderland. Mendonca has not appeared in the first team since December 1999 but an offer by Grimsby director, Colin Graves to bring him home on loan to the Mariners failed after Clive was injured and it seems now that the injury has ended his career.
The Fishy will be putting up a special Message Board for fans to send their greetings which will be passed on to him.
