Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Dr Fishy's Player Of The Year - Week 4

By: Dr Fishy
Date: 26/05/2002

SO it's four down and 16 to go. Wayne Burnett, Menno Willems, Mike Jeffrey and Phil Jevons have all been featured, and as I informed you last week, this week's pair is from midfield.

After missing the first third of the season through injury and playing almost constantly towards the end, in 16th place it is Stacy Coldicott. The midfield terrier did okay whenever he played and he achieves an overall grade of C.

Stace was graded 19 times by myself and wracked up a total of 141 points, which equates to an average rating of 7.4 out of ten. He's a bit unlucky, as just another 0.1 would have got him C+.

Coldicott got a C 26% of the time and his best mark came in his first game of the season - the 3-1 win over Birmingham at Blundell Park. His worst grade was a D-, no doubt somewhere in the dark winter months.

His best run was over 10 games, so he's a fairly consistent average player. A typical 'squad' player. His worst run was over 8 games (where he failed to get a B) because he was basically getting a load of Cs.

In total he got no As, three Bs, 14 Cs, and two Ds. Despite being low down on the Dr Fishy list, it's not an all-bad record considering the time Stace entered the team but he was also playing at a time when Town were in great form.

So now we move on to 15th place. Here is an adaptable player who was mostly unpopular for some reason with the fans in the Lower Smiths. As you may have guessed by now it's Danny Butterfield.

The Boston-born defender/midfielder was graded 40 times by Dr Fishy and totalled 294 points. This equals an average rating of 7.4, exactly the same as Coldicott but after more games showing he can maintain some form.

This means his overall grade for the season is also a C but again just 0.1 extra would have seen him climb to C+. His best grade was A- (Liverpool) and his worst was just a D (take note). Not an E, not even a D-, just D.

Butterfield got a grade C 28% of the time and his best run came over 28 games of the season. That's 28 games without getting a D. He may have got some stick towards the middle part of the season but he obviously still impressed Dr Fishy to some extent.

His worst run was over 8 games, possibly starting at New Year and ending at Watford. In total he got one A, eight Bs, 29 Cs, and two Ds. From that evidence there appears no reason to drop him out of the side and deserves a new contract.

Ok, there we have it. Coldicott and Butterfield have been analysed, and next week we'll be looking at another versatile midfielder and a defender. Both have been graded around 30 times by myself. That's the only clue I'm giving.
