Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

No Cash! No Players!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 07/07/2002

PETER Furneaux has sent out a blunt warning to fans that they should not expect to see the Mariners signing new players in the near future saying the club do not have any cash to buy players.

Paul Groves was aware of that before he signed his three-year contract. What Groves does have in the kitty is money to re-sign the out of contract players. If he decides not to sign anyone he can use that money to bring in a fresh face, which is what appears to have happened when Butterfield signed for Crystal Palace and Groves signed Terry Cooke.

".…There is no money whatsoever to purchase players!!…."

The emphasis now is growing our own talent for the future. Furneaux said: "There is no money whatsoever to purchase players and the club must now live within its income streams. We cannot compete with the Coventry's, the Sheffield Wednesday's and other clubs. That means we must organise better and get Grimsby going again and playing together and I believe that it can be done and we can take things forward."

However it is not clear if Furneaux made that statement before the news broke regarding the £95 million TV deal with Sky from which Town will receive around £800,000 this season.

Whatever the answer to that, the deal has thrown a lifeline to Nationwide league clubs although, as expected, the deal is not worth as much as the ITV Digital contract. If there is a settlement to the ITV Digital fiasco which goes to court towards the end of this month, that could bring a further bonus to league clubs.

If it does go to court and is contested, it could be many months before any outcome could be expected. It is hoped that if this first court hearing decides that there is a case to answer, an offer to settle may be made and that is why fans should carry on supporting actions such as the "Can the Commercials" campaign and help to bring pressure on Granada and Carlton.
