Barnard Makes It Two!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 02/08/2002

FORMER Barnsley midfielder Darren Barnard, who cost the Tykes £750,0000 five years ago, became the second player from the Division Two club to sign for the Mariners today. The 30-year-old Welsh international joins centre back Steve Chettle at Blundell Park in a two year deal.

Barnard and Chettle follow in the well-trodden steps of Jim Dobbin and Paul Futcher in moving to Blundell Park from the South Yorkshire club, with Kevin Donovan having made the journey in the opposite direction last summer in a futile attempt to avoid relegation to Division Two - a fate that ironically befell Barnsley, not Town.

German-born Barnard, who has 17 caps for Wales (15 more than new team mate Danny Coyne), was the final installment of a quintet of players whose future was revealed as lying at Blundell Park today.

It was announced that Coyne and Phil Jevons have been taken off the transfer list this morning, in addition to the two new signings from Barnsley that were revealed later in the day.

Finally, as expected, central defender Simon Ford also signed up for a new two-year deal with Grimsby Town late on Friday night.

The development is perhaps the most significant for Grimsby since 25th February, when Charlton duo Andy Todd and Martin Pringle arrived on loan in what turned out to be an audacious loan coup by Town boss Paul Groves.
