GRIMSBY Town striker Steve Livingstone has vowed to return sooner rather than later, after he was released from hospital yesterday. Speaking to the Grimsby Telegraph the 33-year old revealed his desire just to get back playing again.
"Some of my 'fans' have turned round and said I should retire but I've got bad news for them: I'm okay!" said Livingstone. "I'll be back sooner not later. As long as my head heals I'll be back quickly.
"I'll recover and be back as good as new. I've already been out for a year and was looking forward to the three games that I've played for so long. I've got to go back to hospital in four weeks for a check-up to make sure it's okay then I should be able to start training again.
"I tried to explain to the doctors that I've just missed a year and I need to be playing again in a fortnight, but they just kept looking at me and shaking their heads! I've tried to convince everyone in the hospital to let me play again and get back now.
"I can't remember anything about the game, I've seen a clip of the challenge and the lad has rung me to say sorry. He was very apologetic, saying that he didn't mean it. I just told him not to worry and that I'd see him on Boxing Day.
"I didn't mean it to sound how it did, but now that I've seen the clip I'm glad it did. It looked like he came at me a little bit."
Livingstone slipped in and out of consciousness after suffering the injury at the weekend, described what was going through his mind as he was taken to hospital.
"All I can remember is fighting people, either on the stretcher or in the ambulance, when it felt like they were putting their hands on my face and suffocating me. I thought it was the physio trying to suffocate me.
"I keep forgetting what day it is and the doctors have said that my short-term memory will take a while to come back. My ear feels like it's clogged up and there's a crack behind it which is still bleeding internally.
"But it has its advantages. When Macca came to visit me I just put him on my bad ear so I couldn't hear him. A lot of the lads came up. Gally came and I think it was him who made me lose my memory. He was that boring!
But Livingstone clearly hasn't lost his sense of humour as a result of the clash, as he concluded: "I'm just looking forward to getting my own back on my wife now and telling her it's me that has got a headache!"
