Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Duo to Sign Next Week

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 14/06/2003

WITH just a fortnight to go until Grimsby Town's pre-season begins, Paul Groves has revealed that next week is likely to bring two major first team signings to Blundell Park, one of whom is believed to be an unnamed overseas player.

The second major signing will hopefully be one of Town's out-of-contract first team players putting pen to paper on a new deal to remain at Blundell Park.

If the new player signs it will leave a total of eight to the reach the board's promised figure of ten new faces for the start of pre-season - a total that now looks unlikely to be achieved given the time frame involved.

"There's a serious possibility that we may make a couple of signings by next week," Town boss Paul Groves told the Grimsby Telegraph. "I will not release names until everything is signed and we certainly won't be counting our chickens.

"But they are players that are going to be challenging for a first team spot and looking to play on a regular basis. They will be important players."

The out-of-contract player is likely to be one of midfielder Stacy Coldicott or full back John McDermott, with Cape Verdes international midfielder/central defender George Santos an outside possibility.
