Clyde Wijnhard At BP On Trial

CLYDE Wijnhard has joined Grimsby Town on trial and will be training with the squad. Wijnhard is another striker Paul Groves is looking at as the season beckons and the Mariners so far are without one.

There are those who suggest that those we have will be good enough, therefore there is no need to panic into signing anyone in a hurry but Paul Groves appears not to be convinced by that argument and we may see other prospective signings over the next few days.

Comments about the former Ajax striker include:

"Good strikers keep getting in the right areas, and Clyde's hold-up and link play has been magnificent"

"Tries hard and does his best, but fluffed several easy chances when he was at Leeds and didn't really seem to have the striker's instinct."

"He moved on to Huddersfield in summer 1999 where he had been an outstanding success in the slightly less demanding environment of Division 1. A broken arm and other serious injuries sustained in a car accident in 2000 kept him out for most of the rest of that season and although he came back into the Huddersfield side he was sold to help set the club's finances on an even keel in the run-up to deadline day in 2002."

"He scored three good goals in his short stint at Preston but having failed to agree terms with the club went round several other clubs on trial - Barnsley, Galatasaray and Oldham where he is currently playing on a non-contract basis."
