Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Iffy Signs! Daws Escapes!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 24/10/2003

SHEFIELD United striker Iffy Onuora has signed for the Mariners on a permanent basis until the end of the season, but fellow loanee Nicky Daws looks to have slipped through the net after Rotherham and Grimsby failed to agree terms for a loan extension.

The 36-year-old target man has been on loan at Blundell Park for the previous month, and scored his first goal for Grimsby in Saturday's 2-0 victory over Colchester. Paul Groves, who has had money earmarked for a new striker since July, was delighted to get his man after four months attempting to do so.

"He's made a difference to the side and he's a man who's ready to play," the Town boss told the Grimsby Telegraph. "He's taken the weight off Michael's [Boulding] shoulders and he's a problem in both boxes for the opposition.

"He stops the ball coming crashing back at us and he's a presence. We're delighted to have got it sorted out. There's no doubt about it, he's made a big contribution to the team and the change in our performances of late."

Groves has not completely abandoned persuading Rotherham to part with midfielder Nicky Daws for another month, although that will defintely not happen in time for the 33-year-old to face the Tykes tomorrow. The Millers and Town are deadlocked over the share of his wages that Grimsby would have to pay if Daws were to come back to Blundell Park for a second loan period.

In other news club captain John McDermott trained today after suffering from a mild sciatica problem, and is expected to start at Oakwell tomorrow afternoon in the big clash with Town's South Yorkshire rivals
