Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

"No disrespect to the likes of Grimsby..."

Palace Didn't Want Him [Kabba]

From the Daily Mail

Despite his speed and skill, plus goals for the reserves, he found it quite difficult to break through at Selhurst Park with the likes of Clinton Morrison and Dougie Freedman ahead of him. And when you're loaned out to Grimsby, you know you've got problems.

Comic Relief Football Challenge

From BBC Radio 1

"The best part of this 24 hours were the fish and chips and cheerleaders at Grimsby."

Spotted by Jonathan Parkes.

From the East Anglia Daily Times

"...it would be wrong for a club like Wolves for example, to have the same ceiling as say Grimsby," said Joe Royle.

Serendipity Corner

From the Guardian

Serendipity corner: Grimsby Town this week celebrated their biggest sponsorship deal, struck with the government favourite Jarvis. In the week the construction company made a bold leap into the education business (and it is a business), it sealed a three-year contract with the Mariners. Believed to be worth a six-figure sum, the agreement will mean a change in away strip colours (to Jarvis grey) and, with the kind of expertise that can only be found in the private sector, a performance-related payment clause. Government modernisers take note.

Glorious Defeats

From the Newcastle OS

Just like the old days then, a packed house, pudding of a pitch, standing terraces and a cracking atmosphere.

Happily for us though, our excursion into the past still saw us emerge victorious, unlike so many of those glorious defeats at smaller clubs in our fallow years out of the top flight.

Many of those present in the Moyes end at London Road on Sunday no doubt watched from similar vantage points as we were humbled by the likes of Grimsby, Luton and of course Peterborough in those dark days of the 80's and early 90's when big away support used to equate with disappointment.
