Mystery Trialist Named

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 31/07/2004

GRIMSBY have officially named their new Nigerian trialist as Samuel Umerah (aka Sammi). Very little is known about the 6'5" target man other than that he has had a trial at Bolton, where he was recommended to Sam Allardyce by fellow countryman Jay-Jay Okocha.

Bolton took Sammi on trial after Jay-Jay Okocha advised Sam Allardyce to have a look at the Nigerian during the club's recent two-match tour of Portugal.

Allardyce said: "He is somebody that Jay-Jay alerted us to when we were in Portugal," reported sportinglife.com.

"He has been playing reserve-team football in Germany and we thought we would have a look at him.

"We like the size of him for a start - certainly the athletic side of him - and we have seen him in training for two or three days and decided to involve him in the game."

Town boss Russell Slade is still looking for one final player, a big "target man" type of striker to complete his 2004-2005 squad. An Argentian trialist is also due at Blundell Park in the next few days.

Grimsby's final pre-season friendly is at Halifax on Monday, in which Sammi is likely to feature.
