19-matches without an away win could have been on the cards but Slade's boys broke the dismal away run with a 2-0 win over Cambridge. By all the reports it was not an awe inspiring game but the Mariners did enough to claim the glory - but not without the help of the Fishy! (keep reading)
Town boss Russell Slade was obviously delighted with the away win saying; "Obviously the form away from home wasn't the best before I arrived, so to get a result today is delightful and 'sets us' up for Friday."
"We want to use it as a platform. We wanted to use the mid week game against Charlton as a platform to build on -we've done that today. It sets us up for Friday now."
"We didn't pass the ball particularly well in the first period and some of our decisions weren't too clever. Second half, I thought we were workmanlike and I thought that if we could get that goal we could go on and win it."
"Once we got the goal, we seemed to settle down a little bit more, get back to our passing game and look in command. I do feel that we should have got more on our travels - today we got it."
On Parkinson he said; "Parky, his industry has been terrific for us and he has not always got the rewards. He's picked his spot today and taken it really well. I'm really pleased for him."
"And then the old man Macca, he's pulled his leg back and put it in the corner - he told the goalkeeper not to go for them." he joked.
Slade praised Terrell Forbes. "I thought that he was the master at the back. Anything behind or down the side he runs out of play and he reads it exceptionally well. I'm delighted with his performance and the rest of the back three."
N.B. There may be a few changes for Tuesday's LDV trip to Carlisle.
Herve Renard, on the other hand, was an unhappy man and was not afraid to criticise his players. "We don't deserve another result, if you don't play well, make too many technical mistakes, then the result is normal."
Reserve 'keeper James Jowsey was used rather than Shaun Marshall. "I chose James and the responsibility for the goals is not only for him, but the bad passes on the left side after a throw-in and some details."
"But I don't have another option at the moment, I think Shaun's mind is not good enough to play this game. That is my opinion, I accept the responsibility, this is my job.
"Some players played very well with a good heart, but not all the players, and I think Grimsby deserve this result."
"I told the players we don't deserve the result. Too many technical mistakes and, not enough movement with the ball."
"Grimsby's organisation was very good but that is not an excuse. We have to move the ball more and I think we deserve this result. Before the first goal our passing was approximate and so a goal is normal. If the application is not better it will be difficult."
"Last week was very good and the draw was good. Today the sanction is terrible but it is normal. We cannot say we were unlucky."
The Cambridge fans too were disappointed.
1_HALES_1 on the Cambridge Rivals site said; "Poor, Poor, Poor. I'm disappointed. Apart from Tann, Angus and Gleeson the side didn't turn up. The passing and movement was rubbish. The game lacked width, and more importantly, any goalmouth action from us!
Let's hope we show some 'Bouncebackability' by beating Kidderminster!
But the final word must go to the Fishy clan and we are claiming an 'assist' for the first goal!
PaulGTFC one of our Fishy subscribers said on the Fishy MB; "Think back to the 1st goal. What do you remember? The pass through to Parky? The build up before the pass? The initial throw in?"
"Well think what lead to the throw in."
"It was the ball sailing into the away fans and yours truly smartly punching it straight out to a waiting Town player (Macca I think). The rest, as they say, is history. So indirectly yours truly started the ball rolling for our opening goal and lets face it, we needed something to get us going!"
