Is football a business or a sport?

Laws, Slade and The Man In Black!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 07/11/2004

RUSSELL Slade said after the match that he was "disappointed" An understatement of enormous proportions. It was woeful! Some would say tragic! Not because we lost but because "we had no answer to a better team." (per George Kerr)

Forget the fact it was a local "Derby" and disregard all the emotive stuff that goes with them, we played against a team that not only made chances, but took them. Something we have failed to do season after season.

Mr Slade said he was disappointed particularly as it was the first derby in a long time.

He told the official site; "One man wanted to dominate proceedings. When we went down to ten men it was bound to be difficult."

"When Scunthorpe scored it was from a rolling ball, whether it was a free kick or not. We tried to speak to the referee at half-time - but he turned that down."

"They created three chances. I thought we were good value for an hour. We battled away. Collectively we have to be mentally tougher and learn from today's experience."

Brian Laws said: "I thought our players were superb and stayed focussed on the game they didn't get fazed by what is our biggest local derby, they stayed fixed on what we wanted to achieve."

"The first goal was well thought out, Peter saw something quickly, played it to Baraclough and he played a delightful ball into the path of Paul Hayes to secure the goal. You can question whether the free kick was in the right position but it all happened so quickly."

"We are delighted to get win under our belts. Before the match I told the players - don't get involved and be distracted from what we really want."

"I thought it was going to be a very tight game."

"There were a lot of flying tackles in the first fifteen minutes. I thought the referee was going to let things go, but then he booked McDermott and I thought that was harsh. It was a 50-50 ball."

"Sendings off are turning points in games. There was a bit of a fracas in the right hand corner, Daly has stamped on his foot. Everyone saw that and the referee saw it too."

"They just lost their cool and it cost them dearly in the end."

"I wouldn't have wanted a goal scored against us like the second. When you see the goalkeeper coming out, maybe he shouldn't have done. Hayes stood out the way and it fell for Paul. You have to be there and take your chance."

The Referee said; "Daly was sent off for violent conduct. He raised his hands."

"Russell Slade commented on a few things in the game. I thought I had a good game. Grimsby were kicking the ball away. They showed a bit of petulance."

On the 'foul' on Jason Crowe that preceded the sending off he said; "I didn't see it as a foul. I thought the two players went for the ball. I brought the play back because there was a head injury."

"It was a tough game from the start. All four officials were up for it and had a good game."
