AN impressive performance by the Mariners at in-form Southend earned Grimsby a point with a 1-1 draw, although both sides missed chances to win the game. Mistakes by both sides led to the goals in what was a thoroughly entertaining game.

Town continued with their new-look 4-4-2 formation, where Terry Fleming returned in midfield, but Michael Reddy had to settle for a place on the bench.
Town started brightly, with Jason Crowe prominent on the right, and it was the former Pompey utility player who had the first chance of the game, but could only shoot straight at Bart Griemink.
It was the Mariners, though, who took the lead when an attempted backpass by Wayne Gray fell at the feet of John McDermott, who cooly slotted the ball home like a seasoned striker to put Town 1-0 up.
The closest the Shrimpers came to scoring in the first half was a free kick which just shaved the outside of the post.
Town had three great opportunities at the start of the second half to double their lead. A Jason Crowe header hit the bar, and bounced straight to Andy Parkinson, who could only head the rebound over from close range. The second was a lob by Colin Cramb which went just over, and the third a Parkinson shot which went agonisingly wide.
But it was the Essex side who grabbed the next goal after Rob Jones gave the ball away just outside the penalty area. Former West Ham striker Fredy Eastwood made the most of the opportunity to level things up for Southend.
Town came under a lot of pressure in the remainder of the game, with Southend looking particularly dangerous from corners and high balls into the box. The Mariners, though, had several opportunities to score on the break, with Parkinson in particular being a constant menace to the Southend defence with his tireless runs.
It was Parkinson who almost scored a winner for Town deep in injury time, but his shot was deflected narrowly wide of the goal by Bart Griemink.
