Town's Winning Sequence

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 11/09/2005

TOWN'S win at Peterborough was their sixth consecutive away victory, the best sequence in the Mariners' 127 year history. Grimsby have twice won five consecutive away games: once in 1951-52 under Bill Shankley; and again in 1982 under Dave Booth.

The sequence in 1951-52 was all in one season, with all the games taking place in Division 3 North.

26-Jan-52Accrington S3-0
16-Feb-52Tranmere3-2
23-Feb-52Workington4-2
08-Mar-52Crewe2-1
22-Mar-52Darlington2-0

As with the present run, the 1982 sequence straddled two seasons, and included a League Cup win. 1982's games were all in the old Division 2, now known as "The Championship".

12-May-82Leicester2-1
31-Aug-82Scunthorpe (LC)2-1
04-Sep-82Carlisle3-2
18-Sep-82Charlton1-0
28-Sep-82Middlesbro4-1

Here is today's sequence.

30-Apr-05Kidderminster4-1
09-Aug-05Bristol R2-1
24-Aug-05Derby (LC)1-0
27-Aug-05Barnet1-0
06-Sep-05Chester2-1
10-Sep-05Peterborough1-0

Grimsby's worst sequence of consecutive away defeats stands at 11, which occurred in 1967-1968. Almost as bad was the club's recent run of away games between 03-Jan-2004 and 25-Sep-2004 when they lost 14 out of 15 matches away from Blundell Park, with a 4-4 draw at Chesterfield being Grimsby's only point on their travels (although even that effectively relegated the club).

Grimsby's next away game is on 24-Sep at neighbours Boston, who they have never beaten!
