Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Newey: Belter!
Newey: Belter!

Macclesfield Part 2

By: Gareth Edwards
Date: 12/11/2005

MACCLESFIELD almost began the second half as they ended the first, but this time Mildenhall was equal to Parkin’s long range effort.

The fans' favourite keeper was then forced to make an even more vital stop when Macclesfield broke from a Town corner, Mildenhall making a brave block from a Danny Whitaker one-on-one.

Town then seemed to settle after a frantic start and looked to build up a head of steam by simply retaining possession. The game became increasingly open as a result with both sides looking for the chance to see them take the lead. Gary Cohen won Town a corner with his endeavour on the wing and despite the original delivery being cleared, it fell to Toner who fed Tom Newey on the edge of the box. He rounded Wijnhard and smashed one, left footed into the right hand corner of Fettis’ goal before triumphantly celebrating his first Town goal in front of the lower smiths.

Town then almost made a repeat performance of the play following the first goal, by being at sixes and sevens at the back, but this time Macclesfield could not capitalise. Town continued to look for a third at the other end to kill off the game, whilst remaining weary of the threat from the bright Macclesfield front two.

With ten minutes remaining, Horton threw on John Miles in the search of an equaliser, by gambling with three up front. This almost paid off but David Beresford could not capitalise in Ramsden’s scuffed clearance and it was at the other end from the which the game’s fourth goal came. Gary Cohen’s endeavour was rewarded when he picked up a half-clearance on the edge of the area, and the winger was able to ride two challenges through sheer determination before forcing the ball home in front of the Pontoon to ensure a Town win was on the cards.

Calvin Andrew replaced Andy Parkinson with ten minute to go and Town finished the game in a professional manner, maintaining their two gaol lead till the end. Michael Reddy went close to making it four with a trademark surge on the left but his shot angled past the far post. 4-1 would have been a tad harsh on Macclesfield who on another night could have fared better, but Town were definitely well worth their win to restore some much needed confidence to the promotion challenge. This confidence will now face a stern test over the coming weeks with the prospect of away games against Wycombe and Oxford imminent.

Full Time: Town 3 Macclesfield 1

MOTM: A close call but Gary Jones shades it with his best game for Grimsby. Town’s most natural striker showed that with a well taken goal. Link-up lay and aerial presence proved invaluable up front.
