IN a vital weekend of football only Grimsby and Northampton picked up maximum points out of the top eight and Rushden came out on top in the huge six pointer against Torquay at Nene Park. And that is where we begin our round-up.

Drewe Broughton was the toast of the town after his vital goal against Torquay at Nene Park rekindled the Diamonds' hope of survival coming into the climax of the season. The goal which moved Rushden off the bottom of the table came two minutes before half time to the delight of manager Barry Hunter.

In another six pointer at the bottom, Chester, who have undergone a mini revival in the past few games, defeated financial strugglers Macclesfield at home. It was in-form striker Derek Asamoah who grabbed the winner in the dying seconds to give Chester a real hope of survival.

Towards the top of the table Grimsby managed to bounce back from the humiliation of being beaten 5-0 at Sincil Bank by defeating Wrexham 2-0 at Blundell Park. Goals from Gary Jones and Michael Reddy moved them four points clear of the promotion zone ahead of next week's huge game at Carlisle.

Northampton managed to join the elite promotion pack by beating local rivals Peterborough at London Road. Scott McGleish's goal was enough to see the Cobblers keep the quest for League One football alive.

Another one of the promotion chasing pack, Leyton Orient picked up a point against Notts County at Meadow Lane. It could have been so much better for the O's after they were denied a win thanks to a late equaliser from County captain, Mike Edwards.

The last of the promotion chasing pack, Wycombe were outplayed and hammered 3-1 at the hands of Bristol Rovers at the Causeway. Two goals from Junior Agogo and another from Richard Walker sealed the points and took Wycombe's promotion hopes further off the rails.

In the arguably the Match of the day, Darlington defeated Lincoln 4-2 at home. Goals from Johnson (twice), Clarke and Bates gave under pressure boss David Hodgson a much needed win. Lincoln's Lincolnshire rivals, Boston though faired much better as they defeated Barnet 2-1 at York Street. This result really throws Barnet into relegation trouble and could easily see them return to the Conference.

Mansfield continued their fantastic turn around with a well-taken 1-0 win at home to Oxford. A late Danny Reet goal sentenced Jim Smith to his first defeat since taking over two weeks ago.

Shrewsbury dealt play-off hopefuls Cheltenham's challenge further with a 2-0 win at Gay Meadow.

We conclude our round-up with Bury's 1-0 away win at Stockport. On-loan star John Daly sealed the points for Chris Casper's side on thirty two minutes.
