Beat the Bookies: Week 42

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 24/05/2006

WEST Ham came so frustratingly close to winning the FA Cup! Beat the Bookies was within a whisker of picking another winner, but at least the season ended with about a 40% profit over 42 weeks, which takes some beating.

There is only one match this weekend, well actually there are two as Swansea play Barnsley in the curtain raiser for the really big one on Sunday.

The bookies make Town narrow favourites, with bet365.com offering 7/5 for a Grimsby win in 90 mins, 15/8 for a Cheltenham victory in normal time and 11/5 for a draw and the resultant extra time.

Those odds seem about right, but instead of plumping for one of those three events, instead it is time to look at the first goal scorer odds. Justin Whittle has yet to find the net this season, and he's come close a few times. Yet the bookies rank Whittle at 50/1 to score the first Grimsby goal (not the first goal of the game, mind). Likewise the odds of Whittle scoring the last Grimsby goal are also 50/1 with bet365.com.

Everyone knows Town are dangerous at set pieces (all three goals against Lincoln were scored that way). Whittle is normally found in and around the box for corners and free kicks. It's a long shot but a fitting way to end the season. To increase your chances put half your stake of the first Grimsby goal and the other on the last (if Town score three and Whittle scores the second you are going to be very happy as well in all probability!)

Beat the Summer Bookies will be appearing shortly when there is the minor matter of the World Cup, amongst other things, to bet on.

RECOMMENDED BET OF THE WEEK:
Justin Whittle to score the first/last Grimsby goals (Two bets at 50/1 each)
