Beat the Summer Bookies: Week Three

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 19/06/2006

THE World Cup is now entering the most interesting phase with the final qualification places up for grabs, as well as the draw for the last 16. All this means there is plenty of things to bet on.

Home > 2005-2006 Season > Beat the Summer Bookies > Week 3

Group A sees Germany and Ecuador meet in the final game to determine who will win the group. Germany must win the game as they have an inferior goal difference to the impressive South Americans. The host nation improved a lot in their second game, but the match against one of the surprise packages of the World Cup should be their biggest challenge to date. The odds of 8.6 generally available on Betfair for an Ecuador win look generous. That is this week's first recommended bet.

In England's Group it's a bit more interesting as Sweden must avoid defeat to be certain of qualifying. Paraguay, who have nothing to play for, are still expected to beat Trinidad and the Caribbean side are ranked around 4.5 on Betfair to topple the South Americans. A bet on Trinidad looks worthy of consideration. England, despite their poor form against mediocre competition so far in the tournament are still expected to beat the Swedes, who will be playing their strongest team. You can get 3.7 on Betfair for a Swedish win. That is this week's second recommended bet.

In Group D Angola still have an outside chance of qualifying. Portugal must beat Mexico, and Angola see off Iran for that to happen, ideally by a couple of goals. It's a long shot but not that long and the price of around 9.2 on Betfair for the Angolans to qualify looks worth taking. That is this week's third recommended bet.
