Georges Santos Interview

By: Jake Olley
Date: 09/07/2006

GEORGES Santos was head and shoulders above the rest of the squad in the 2002/03 season, and won Player of the Year despite only arriving in October. Sadly though Town went down that year and were to spiral into decline after Georges left.

So George, you're at QPR (Interview conducted while George was still a QPR player) and have been for two seasons, how’s that going and how does it compare to Grimsby?

It’s going very well for me. I play week in week out here. The main difference is that the training ground is much than Grimsby’s. The Grimsby fans are very good though.

What appealed to you most about QPR?

I had the chance to play every weekend because the manager from Ipswich (Joe Royle then) said I wasn't in his plans so I took the great offer of QPR. I feel it is a big club. The manager Ian Holloway had tried to bring me to the club for two years so that helped.

When you were at Grimsby you solely played centre half but now you are more of a midfielder, how does that compare and do you prefer it?

I played midfield a couple of times at Grimsby and I enjoyed it. But at QPR I've played a different position. I love my position in defence and yes I prefer it.

When you were at Grimsby we struggled and you decided to move on and join Ipswich, firstly was that a hard decision and what swayed it for you?

It was hard because I loved the club, the fans and the staff who I had worked with for a long time. But I left for a new challenge and Ipswich was certainly that. We did well and got to the play offs only to lost to West Ham.

On the whole what was your opinion of Paul Groves’ management skills?

Paul Groves was a very good manager and a good man! His tactics and training was good also as we always tried to play a bit of football - with a bit of luck we would have stayed up! The fact he had no money was difficult for him.

Do you think you could ever return to Grimsby?

You never know in football - who knows? I would like to if they wanted me.

What would you say your greatest moment at Grimsby was?

When we beat Sheffield Wednesday and I scored but I would say when I won Play of The Year.

Finally do you have a message to the fans?

Thank you very much for your support and when I played you were the best fans in the world!

We'd also like to take this chance to thank Georges Santos who took time out from his busy schedule to do this interview for Town fans
