Is football a business or a sport?

Nathan Jarman
Nathan Jarman

Nathan's Yar Man

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 23/09/2007

FORMER Barnsley striker Nathan Jarman has signed on a short-term contract after spending the last six weeks training with the Grimsby first team squad. The 21-year-old forward had been tipped for success while a Barnsley youth player, but failed to break into the first team at Oakwell.

Scunthorpe-born Jarman made just three starts for Barnsley since making his debut in November 2004, in addition to 16 substitute appearances, but failed to score a goal. In 2006 he played two games on loan with Bury, his appearances however being restricted as he was sent off on his debut for the Shakers.

Hoping to kick-start his career Jarman then went on loan to Conference North side Worksop Town in February 2007. He played 13 times for the Tigers, scoring four goals (including two spectacular strikes) and was highly rated by the East Midlands club.

Jarman was then released by the Tykes in the summer and was offered a trial with the Mariners where he has scored twice for the Reserves in four games and he has now reached a level of fitness where Town are prepared to offer him a monthly contract at Blundell Park.

Although Jarman has been signed mainly as a squad player, the small size of that squad and the lack of goals from strikers this season to date may mean an opportunity to make a name for himself could be just around the corner for Jarman.
