Town Sink Shrimps

GRIMSBY won another battle against Morecambe with a resounding 4-0 victory at Christie Park, but with the final installment of the trio of matches to come on Tuesday night Town have not yet won the war.

Alan Buckley made no less than five changes to his starting line up to give a chance to some of the fringe players in the squad. Montgomery, Whittle, Hunt, Jones and Bore all made their way into his team which began the League Two fixture.

Morecambe must have been relieved that Peter Till, who terrorised them on Tuesday night, did not start the game. However his replacement Peter Bore, making his first start of the season, was anything but an understudy to Till, his runs at defenders causing the Shrimps no end of problems from the off.

On 18 minutes Bore went close when he beat the offside trap and attempted a lob. The Town striker found the target three minutes later when he ran through a crowd of players and launched the ball into the net.

Within three minutes Bore added a second after Jones was allowed to run into the box. Jones's shot from a narrow angle was saved by the keeper but Bore followed up and nodded in from four yards out.

After the break Montgomery made a point blank save to deny the unmarked Blinkhorn, who was should have done better from a position around the penalty spot.

Town then scored an outstanding team goal involving nearly every outfield player. Grimsby's passing had their hosts chasing shadows and Bolland rounded off the move by striking the ball against the post. Bore nipped in to score his hat trick, but the keeper got a hand to it, leaving it to Hegarty to finish from point blank range.

Another forgotten man Martin Butler came on for the tiring Gary Jones as Town were about to take a corner. The ball was touched on by Fenton to Butler who had made his way into the box, where he spun and struck the ball into the net to put Town an unbelievable four goals up.

Montgomery made another good save in injury time to ensure Town kept a clean sheet.

Alan Buckley now has the difficult task to pick a starting 11 from about 15 individuals who have a claim for one of the 11 jerseys.
