GRIMSBY fell victim to a Darlington fightback, as Town's bogey side overturned a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 and ensure that the Mariners' 30 year quest for a win against the Quakers continues.

Alan Buckley rested Hegarty and Jones, bringing in Till to play behind Butler, and Hunt in midfield. Jamie Clarke moved to right wing back and Tom Newey to left wing back.

After a quiet start the game burst to life on 27 minutes. Newey made a run into the box, picked out Till who made a clever pass to Butler on an overlapping run. The in-form Town striker scored from a narrow angle, beating the keeper on his near post.

A minute later Butler again linked up with Till, cut inside and shot past the bemused Stockdale.

Darlington though responded like a wounded animal and Town were under the cosh for the remainder of the first half.

Almost immediately Kennedy fed the dangerous Abbott who lobbed Barnes to halve the deficit.

Darlington had several chances to level the game but had to wait until just before half time. The same two players combined, Kennedy playing a ball over the top to Abbott who slotted it cooly past Barnes.

Alan Buckley brought on Justin Whittle for Bennett to try and shore the Town defence.

Grimsby almost went back into the lead at the start of the second half when Bolland hit the post.

Both sides had chances, to win the game, but Darlington took the lead on 64 when Wright drilled the ball past Barnes with a shot from the edge of the box.

Town pressed for an equaliser and although Peter Till and James Hunt came close it wasn't to be an finally the magnificent unbeaten away run came to an end.

Grimsby chances of making the play-offs have diminished, and realistically they probably cannot afford to lose any of their remaining eight games if they are to have a chance of ending in the top seven.
