Town Topple Trinity

GRIMSBY Town travelled to Gainsborough yesterday to try and achieve their first win of their pre-season to date.

The Mariners lined up with a strong team. Town had Barnes between the sticks, a back four of Stockdale, Fenton, Hope and Newey, a midfield quartet of Till, Hunt, Clarke and Hegarty with Llewellen and Butler up front.

Town were on top from the word go and scored early on when Peter Till cut in from the right and drilled a 20 yard strike past the Trinity Keeper.

The game was still going Town's way with both Hegarty and Till having further chances to score, but it was Butler who grabbed the second in the 29th minute, after Till's shot was blocked. Butler did well to turn and slot past the beaten goalie from just inside the 12 yard box.

Butler then should have doubled his tally when he went clean through in a one on one with the goalkeeper. He had Hegarty to his left, but choose to shoot and it rattled the crossbar.

At half time no subs were made by the Mariners.

Buckley made his way to the dug out and the first sub did come shortly after, with Danny North coming on in place of the well improved Llewellen.

Peter Bore then came on for my Man of the Match Till, as the game became more of a light training session with the job already done for Town.

Hunt had a shot blocked before he was replaced by youngster Drew Rhodes.

Danny North found some space and beat the offside trap but couldn't get his shot on target.

Another sub, this time Fenton who looks more likely to be staying at Blundell Park next season came off for Matty Bird.

Town's final two changes came in the last 10 minutes with Normington and Taylor coming on in place of the goalscorer Butler and Stockdale.

Town had a chance to make it three late on when Clarke stormed through the Trinity defence to cross low for Taylor, who skied the ball over the bar.

That was the last opportunity for Buckley's men as the ref blew for full time.

Town are getting a little bit better each game and seem more vocal on the pitch. Hope again looked strong and determined and Llewellen looked fitter and sharper. Till looks like he will have a great season and Newey impressed me.
