Dagenham v Grimsby

By: Alex Green
Date: 28/10/2008

IT is time for Town to do something about this unbelievably terrible record. The Spurs win on Sunday leaves us as I'm sure you all know as the only team in the professional or semi professional leagues in England Scotland and Wales without a win!

The Opposition

Overview

The Daggers survived their first season in the league on 49 points, 7 ahead of the last relegation place. Though it hardly warrants a celebration for many a small club in the East End of London fighting against the bigger clubs for notoriety it was a big achievement after running away with the Conference with 95 points in 2007. It is hoped that the East London club can now move forward and establish themselves in the leagues and expand along the lines of Leyton Orient who have been grown and grown since the late 90’s. Last year Dagenham and Redbridge were seen as just as successful on the road as they were at home accumulating only one point less outside of the capital then they did at their small compact home in the borough of Barking. The East End club will though want to improve on their -21 goal difference which they found themselves with last season and, though none of last year statistics can be attributed to one single problem, such a high minus number indicates The Daggers need a tweak rather then a full refit when it comes to the team they have impressively gathered together.

The Team
Manager John Still (above)) cut his teeth at Peterborough when after 67 games he left to manage North London whipping boys Barnet, where he managed over 200 games in two spells before taking Dag and Red on their assent. Ever since his arrival in 2004 The Daggers have steadily improved and now Still has a strong nucleus of loyal players he isn't tempted at all to change his approach. This summer saw four new arrivals as he and the club can count on more funds from their league status, a further two have been added on loan most notably a young Pompey midfielder Matt Ritchie (left) who arrived in early September. The 6-0 win against Chester on the opening day of the season put goal scorers Saunders, Strevens and Benson in a good mood as they continued to pile them in and from then on its been a confident start for the strikers. In fact till the 10th October the only defeats accredited to the team who are still acclimatising to life in the leagues were against just relegated Premier leagues aficionados Reading. a derby defeat against Brentford and one against the always impressive Wycombe. All of which were by a single goal. Saturday's 3-0 defeat at the hands of fellow play-off hopefuls Darlington will have put a dampener on things and with games against ourselves and not so in-form Accrington The Daggers will be hoping this will push them back up the table to be the dark horses in the race for the title.

One to Watch
Solomon Taiwo. Taiwo arrived from Sutton Utd after impressing Stills in a short loan spell lasting 10 matches and though most of those were form the bench it was enough to earn him a free transfer to Victoria Road. Since then the midfielder has yet to miss a match this season and his goals from set pieces may start to become a thing to worry about for teams who are willing to wander when defending them. His goal against Reading alone was enough to show his credential as a powerful force in lower league football and with his second coming two weeks later at Morecambe it would be hoped the Englishmen who turned 23 in April will become a promising talent for Stills to mould into his own.

    Last Meeting

    Dagenham 2 Grimsby 1 (Sat 16th February 2008)

One of a number of dire games and awful performances by Grimsby in 2008. Town went 4-0 down at home to the minnows before Gary Jones pulled back a late goal .
