The Opposition

Overview

Just three points off leaders Darlington with 15 games gone is nothing but positive for the Greater Manchester outfit. The problem is well it's just a little one but they have only picked up three points from a possible 18 in their last six games. Not to mention the fact they were also dispatched from both the FA Cup and Paint Pot within 4 days. Otherwise Bury fans must be living in a careless world hoping they can rectify their problems and get of this league as soon as. Last season's 14th place was solid if not a little disappointing for a team who have promotion aspirations this year. Nevertheless The Shakers will find it an improvement from the previous season where they finished in a worryingly finishing 20th position just two points ahead of Macclesfield and though the 13 point gap between them and relegated Boston is a gap big enough to look comfortable it was hardly a place they wanted to be considering Bury were gracing Division One with us a decade ago.

The Team

Bury like ourselves have one of the smallest squads in the league, with just 21 players on any sort of contract. Its surprising Alan Knill hasn't become more dependant on the load system and with Town acquiring a slack handful of loanees during the early start of the season Bury have only needed to ask for two (Elliot Bennet, Wolves and Chris O’Grady of Oldham). With just these two it's even more surprising that Knill has found room to be able to also send out former Lincoln defender Paul Morgan on loan to Macclesfield. Defensively Bury look to be as strong as they come. The well experienced Efe Sodje signed for Bury in the summer after impressing on a loan spell form Gillingham, while former Mariner Ben Futcher also finds a place in the strong back four. Brian Barry Murphy and Ryan Cresswell complete the defence in what’s looks to be one of the strongest in the league on paper. Local born David Buchanan starts a midfield quartet usually including Richard Baker, Stephen Dawson and the aforementioned loanee of Elliot Bennet. Up front Bury were lucky enough to hang on to a striker who was touted to be going to many clubs in the summer but decided to keep residents at Gigg Lane for the foreseeable future. One name Town fans will be happy to see omitted is that lovely chap David Challinor who has decided his second rate Rory Delap throws and utter contempt for anyone else with a future ahead of them has left the league for good to pursue his hatchet jobs at Colwyn Bay.

One to Watch

Andy Bishop. It’s hardly surprising that when Bishop hits a dry spell Burys form takes a nose dive and with 1 goal in 8 matches its no wonder Bury have managed just 3 points from 15. Nonetheless he’s a striker Town would quite happily trade the Main Stand for at the moment a proven goalscorer at this level. Bishop found them bashing (Geddit?) them in with ease between August and early October nearly averaging a goal every two hours at one point. With Bishop in such a dry spell at the moment it wouldn’t surprise any of us if him and Bury refound the form they had early on against ourselves on Saturday.
