Beat the Bookies: Week 20

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 17/12/2008

ONLY a small profit was made last weekend with Macclesfield's win at Chesterfield on Friday night more than covering the losses sustained in the other games. Sadly Town's win against Shrewsbury was not one of our tips!

Home > 2008-2009 Season > Beat the Bookies > Week 20

Aldershot v Grimsby. On paper Town don't stand a chance against a team who haven't lost at home all season and have won four games on the spin, but Town's recent signings plus of course their win against Shrewsbury last week mean they could well be a tougher challenge than that bit of paper may suggest. What's more Aldershot haven't played for two weeks so may well have lost some of the momentum that have built up prior to that. Town can be backed at 9/2 with several bookies including Paddy Power. Alternatively you can back Town at +0.75 in the Asian Handicap at just under evens which pays out for a draw, and only the loss of half your stake for a 1 goal defeat. Selection: Grimsby.

Notts County v Lincoln. County had a bad result last week losing to Chester and the pressure is starting to grow on their manager after a poor string of results. Jamie Forrester's red card at Chester also means they'll be missing one of their better players. Lincoln had been doing poorly but had a terrific win last week against Accrington and should do well in this local derby. 7/4 for an away win looks a bit on the long side in this game. Selection: Lincoln.

Bradford v Chester. For those looking for an odds-on banker Bradford's game at home to Chester could well provide a good bet. City have dropped a few points recently, but Chester are usually poor, although they do have the habit of springing the odd unexpected result. Selection: Bradford.

Accrington Stanley v Rotherham. It would be hard to forgive Rotherham's players from having one eye on Wembley. A possible relegation battle aside their league season is already over, and just Scunthorpe stand between them and a place at Wembley. That last thing they might want to happen is get injured playing at Accrington Stanley of all places. Rotherham's recent league form has been terrible and they could well fall again at Stanley. A home win can be backed at 6/4. Selection: Accrington.

Darlington v Barnet. For once a Grimsby away win isn't the longest odds on the coupon. This is another fixture where everyone will be going for Darlington, but in this division there's always the possibility of an upset and the away teams do tend to get overpriced in this sort of game, especially when Darlo have had a tough cup game in midweek and had the disappointment of losing to penalties to Rotherham. Barnet can be backed at 11/2 and are also available at just over evens in the Asian Handicap at 0.75. Selection: Barnet.

This season we will be trying out three different betting strategies:

  • Fixed Odds - as per last year
  • Spread Betting on the Mini Performance Index with IG Index (25 points for a win, 10 for a draw, 10 for a goal)
  • The Monkey (betting on Town to win each game 3-1, i.e. the complete absence of any betting strategy).

Recommended Fixed Odds Bets

  • 1. Grimsby to beat Aldershot . (9/2 Paddy Power),
  • 2. Lincoln to beat Notts County. (7/4 Bet365),

Recommended Spread Bet

    No bet

The Monkey's Bet

  • Grimsby to win 3-1, 40/1 Bet365
