Grimsby v Notts County Preview

By: Alex Green
Date: 25/12/2008

BOXING Day brings unwanted leftovers, a pile or wrapping paper too large to be squeezed into the recycling bin and the festive football to delight us all. For us at Blundell Park Notts County are the visitors traipsing up the A46 in anticipation.

The Opposition

Overview

Town move on from the controversy of Aldershot back home where they hope to record their first back to back home win of the season. A bumper crowd of over 5,500 is expected for the game which opened last year's campaign in which Ryan Bennett's bullet of a header wasn't enough to earn Town all 3 points on the sunny Saturday. This year both teams are massively underachieving. Still in the bottom half of the table the guys from Meadow Lane currently have 21 points The Pies waited till the very last game of September to record their first win and the slow start is still hurting those from Nottingham.

Their History...

Notts County was formed in 1862. Notts County are the oldest of the world's professional association football clubs The Italian football club Juventus got its famous black-and-white striped kits from Notts County.

Last Season Was...

"It was bad: it was not until the final home game against Wycombe that we secured league football for another season. A change in management during the season gave the fans hope but yet again we had another relegation battle."

This Season Is...

"Started with a loss at Bradford on the opening day but then we went on a good run of 11 games unbeaten in the league playing some fantastic football. But then teams worked out how to stop our wingers plus some players got injured and then the season has not been so good. 8 defeats in the last ten matches show how our form has turned upside down."

Their Biggest Hero Is...

"If you're talking present squad it will have to be Myles Weston. He is a fast winger signed after playing on loan and this season he’s shown if he stays injury free he could be one Notts struggle to hold on to in the transfer windows."

What do they think of Blundell Park...

"I always love coming to your ground. I loved last season because it was a nice warm sunny day. I have been many times to your ground and I love the noise that away fans can make plus MacDonald’s is good too."

They're Most Proud Of...

"Our football league history! so these bad seasons fighting relegation every year must come to an end soon so we can always say we are the oldest football league club in the world."

The Future Is...

"Bright the future is black and white"

The Most Famous Player To Have Worn The Shirt...

Tommy Lawton. Played for almost 20 years either side of WWII and scored 90 goals in 151 appearances for us between 47 and 51 when he was probably in his prime.

Their Key Player Is...

Myles Weston - A bright young fast winger who can make full backs in this league look foolish at times. He still as a lot to learn but over time he could become a better player at a high level if he stays injury free.

    Prediction

Well with the current form of Notts and the league places for both clubs I think this will be a draw 1-1

    The Fishy Prediction

Town have enough to overcome Notts County and with their improved performances and a good crowd Town could be looking at a good performance and win at home for the second game running

    Town 3-1 Notts County
