Unbeaten Streak Continues But Mariners Held

2009 is so far proving to be a good year for the Mariners, after a hard fought draw on Tuesday night increased their unbeaten run to 3 games. Town were forced into a change up front. Akpa Akpro was unable to shake off a knock picked up on Saturday against Rotherham, so Peter Bore got the chance to impress Mr. Newell. Otherwise unchanged Town started the slowly in very poor conditions.

With Dagenham pressing early on, Town eventually had a decent sight of goal. Adam Proudlock did well to find space but his shot has very tame and the highly entertaining Roberts gathered comfortably.

Peter Bore was the next to test the Daggers. He cut through the defence and slotted the ball passed the keeper, and with everyone on their feet ready to celebrate, it somehow drifted just wide of the post.

Town finally took the lead midway through the first half thanks to the on-loan ELLIOT, although it a little selfish of him, after Sinclair had cut inside the box and was ready to fire in. Elliot stole the ball from Sinclair to put the Mariners 1-0 up.

Dagenham had now stepped up the tempo and a horrific clearance from Barnes hit Southam and luckily went out for a goal kick.

The Daggers' pressure finally paid dividends as they equalized courtesy of a Nathan Jarman mistake and a fine strike from NURSE. Jarman had won the ball near to the dugouts and tried to back heel the ball, only to lose possession and Taiwo found Nurse. He drove a shot in from around 25 yards to beat the flailing Barnes to the delight of the travelling 44 Daggers' fans and to Daggers' goalkeeper Roberts, who robotically celebrated.

After Dagenham had equalized the game became slightly dull and after a couple of half chances from both sides, the ref blew for half-time.

The second half was nothing to shout about really, although Town fans were in fine voice willing their team on to get a winner. Bore had a decent chance for the Mariners but it wasn't to be and as a scrappy and slightly dull second half came to a close, the Mariners had kept their unbeaten run in 2009 intact.

I think that Akpro was sorely missed, as his ability to hold the ball up and spray passes around wasn't there tonight. Bore did show great energy and determination but was unable to link well with Proudlock, and perhaps should have scored with his chance early on. The players did look a little tired and that is understandable after a good display on Saturday but a few months ago that game would have ended in a TOWN defeat, so kudos to Newell and the players and lets see if we can keep our 2009 going without defeat on Saturday against Bradford.
