Grimsby v Morecambe Preview
By: Alex Green
Date: 24/02/2009
WELL it's the business end of the season now, 5 points off the drop zone and favourites to go down alongside Luton. It's hardly a joyous position to be in come the end of the short month but Town must persist for survival if anything. So welcome for the second time this season to Blundell Park Morecambe woo and hoo. I'm off for a drink.

Morecambe like a worthless High St bank, just keep coming back for more and who can blame them. Undefeated against Town in a year the Shrimpers will hope to complete a BP double in revenge on last season's Paint Pot Trophy that is not that important any more. In fact anyone worth their salt wouldn't be seen dead at a final of that competition especially with more pressing matters like Gaza, the recession, Jade Bleeding Goody and Moyle’s climbing Kilimanjaro. Nevertheless Morecambe are better then us just like the vast majority of teams in the known universe and as such are higher in the league we currently reside in, 13th to be exact. They nestle snugly like a dormouse on a tin of baked beans in a group that are destined for midtable boredom by mid-March. Along with Lincoln, Chesterfield and Aldershot they can sit back and enjoy pretty much nothing but relative calmness from now till May. Well done you, whoop dee bloody doo aren't you all smug all safe and nice away from this horrible battle of nothing more than attrition. As we look upon general uselessness until global warming kicks in and we can change to being a water polo team. Sammy McIllroy is the manager he has been since 2006. He might enjoy fishing, TV, the Gilmore Girls and occasional jelly dances but we don't know as we lost the MI5 file down the back of the sofa. They play in red which is very boring and should really try something a lot more interesting like beige or a green pastel ala Vera Wang collection circa 1994 which is very hip now a days in a retro 90's way. With 1 defeat in 7 to fellow midtablers Aldershot, Morecambe are on a run which would better us most days of the week especially on a Saturday which is disappointing because that is the day the game of soccer (It's not American its a British term get over it when you scoff at Yanks for saying it, it makes you sound like a pleb on holiday in Falerakie.) is most usually played but we play on a Tuesday we may have a chance! Probably not coming to think of it.
Rather tiresomely Morecambe go for the rather clichéd approach to football with 11 players 1 in goal and another 10 in the "outfield." Their positions vary from defence, midfield, attack and the position Tom Newey plays (This position is yet to be verified by the FA as no one seems to know what the point of it is). McIllroy's signings over the summer consisted of Diarmuid O’Carroll from Celtic, Neil Wainwright from Darlington and both Rene Howe (Peterborough) and Ryan McGivern (Man City) on loan. So far this season Rene Howe (left) is making a name for himself with 9 beauties to call his own improving his chances of establishing himself back at London Road. Other then that they aren't too interesting to talk about, they'll turn up some will be alright others will be half decent and all will be forgotten by the time you get in the car for you trip home.
Wayne Curtis. Making over 200 appearances for Morecambe since joining from non-league Barrow in 1997, the experienced striker has been able to make the leap up from non-league to league but not entirely convincingly scoring only 2 goals last year meaning he could quite happily fit in with our team. I wrote this in November and the last sentence still fits perfectly to us. Interesting? Not really bit like Town I guess.
