The Fishy v Lincoln Report

By: Jonathan Spurr
Date: 16/03/2009

IT was given the build-up of all build-ups in the media, it was the first leg of the fans game. GTFFC vs LCFFC. With over 100 people watching Lincoln started the stronger of sides and it was Grimsby who took control of the game when they shocked Lincoln who were expecting a easy victory.

Lincoln fought back and soon had a penalty when Biggles took Taylor down in the area. Eagerly he dispatched his penalty for the Imps. Grimsby fans hit back when Luke O`Hara, wove past three and centred superbly for Nutall to execute an immaculate flicked half volley over Imps' 'keeper Wayne Greaves.

Soon after the half time whistle sounded and it gave both teams chance to take a much needed break for some. Soon after the restart it was Gilliant with a rising 25-yard wonder strike after the Imps were caught in possession to put the Mariners 2-1 in front.

At 2-1 down the Imps fought back and showed their team spirit. Manager David Beck switched to a more direct game, employing 4-3-3, as Burley and Nathan Addlesse played either side of the returning Taylor, which was in turn causing the Mariners' defence of Todd, Parker and Biggles more problems. An almost immediate attack saw the Imps' main man TJ head home to level the game 2-2. The game was soon settled when some defensive errors allowed Ryan Varley to head home the winning goal from yards out to put Lincoln 3-2 ahead, with only minutes left. It was too late for the Mariners to come back into the game, but with 90 mins left this game is far from over.

This was a great game, contested cleanly fairly and honestly by two good sides. Joint man of the match awards went to the Imps' Captain T J Ramsden and Luke O`Hara. The Goal of the game award saw Alec Gilliant receive a well-deserved ovation. Organiser John Spurr received the Sportsmanship award for his efforts on and off the Pitch. Essentially it proved a great day with everyone a winner including the charities but last and not least the much maligned reputations of these two sets of fans who represented their respective clubs amazingly.
