Town Target Conlon

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 20/04/2009

PROVIDED Grimsby Town retain their football league status on-loan Bradford striker Barry Conlon will be high on Town manager Mike Newell's target list for the summer. The 30-year-old scored twice on Saturday to make it five in six games since joining Grimsby.

Mike Newell told the Grimsby Telegraph: "Without a doubt, we'd like him to stay. He's given us not just goals but a real presence on the pitch and in the dressing room. He's been a real asset to us."

Conlon has been a valuable player all over the park, and not just putting the ball in the net. His ability to hold up the ball is good, and his distribution excellent. What's more he's a powerful player at set pieces both defensively and offensively. His overall contribution to the team has been one of the main reasons Town have started picking up points recently.

The Irishman, who is out of contract with Bradford in the summer, is himself keen to stay at Blundell Park, provided the team remain in the League, and Town can meet his wage demands.

"I've already spoken to the manager about it and I'll speak to him again once we know where we are" he said.

"First and foremost, we've got to concentrate on the job in hand and then we can talk in the summer.

"One of the main reasons I came was to help the manager and the team stay in the league but the job's not done yet. If we manage to do the job right, I'll be speaking to him in the summer."

Grim Rob Says: Whether or not we stay up, there's bound to be a lot of changes in the summer as Mike Newell will be keen, like most managers, to build a team in his own style. Our current squad is also rather large. However so many players have passed through Blundell Park this season, it would be good to retain the best of them, and few have been more impressive than Conlon.
