Sweeney Close to Signing

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 23/06/2009

TOWN are close to signing 24-year-old Leeds midfielder Peter Sweeney who had a loan spell at Blundell Park towards the end of last season. Sweeney's spell with Town coincided with Grimsby's terrific run at the end of the season which meant they avoided the drop out of the Football League.

Town boss Mike Newell told Mariners Net: "The chairman is working hard on that. We will do everything possible to try and persuade the player that this is the place he should come to play.

"I know he enjoyed his time here. It was a successful time. If you look at the rest of the season, those last 12 or so games were our most successful spell.

"He is a good lad on and off the pitch and he has good ability. I have said it before that he is a player I am really keen on and I would like to get him to Grimsby. It is something we are working on."

Newell is also looking to bring in several other players, including a new 'keeper.

  • Tickets for the tie at Tranmere in the Carling Cup on Tue 11th August have been reduced to £10 for adults, £5 for young persons £5 and £3 for juniors by payment at the turnstile on the night.

  • The winner of the Grimsby and Scunthorpe game in the Lincolnshire Cup on July 20th will play Lincoln at Sincil Bank in the final of the county's flagship competition on Thursday July 20th at Sincil Bank. Last year Scunthorpe won the trophy, which Grimsby have won more times than anyone else.
