Chris Jones Signs Up

Date: 25/07/2009

SWANSEA striker Chris Jones is the latest player to join Mike Newell's new look Mariners. The 19-year-old turned down a contract with the Championship high-flyers, signing a three year contract with Town.

Jones, who has been capped by Wales at U-21 level, has been on trial with the Mariners this summer. He has been at Swansea in one form or other since the age of 7.

The Welsh youngster, who has spent a fortnight hammering out a deal, told the Grimsby Telegraph: "It's been a long couple of weeks and it's great to get it all sorted. I'm pleased to be here and to be signing for a big club."

"I'd been at Swansea for 12 years and I just think it was a little too long. I needed a fresh start and I'm glad it's here.

"I was offered a new deal but it wasn't what I was looking for and I wanted to leave so this is the perfect chance for me.

"I don't see this as a big step down, I see it as a really good opportunity for me really."

Jones will have plenty of competition to get into the first team with Mike Newell having now half a dozen strikers to call upon.
