Humbled by Tranmere

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 11/08/2009

GRIMSBY once again crumbled after conceding a goal at Tranmere. Despite a promising open 20 minutes, it was the home side who took the lead, and went on to score three times in eight first half minutes, effectively ending the game.

Town made just once change, with Akpa Akpro replacing Chris Jones on the right side of midfield.

Town had the best of the opening spell and their 'keeper Daniels made a fine save, diving to his right on 20 minutes to deny Nick Hegarty.

Tranmere took the lead, a little against the run of play. A fine cross from Cresswell was met by McLaren, whose shot was well saved at point blank range by Colgan. The ball though bounced back to McLaren, who easily directed it in into the goal.

Within minutes it was 2-0. Curran burst into the box and was brought down by Widdowson. Thomas-Moore made no mistake from the spot.

Tranmere completed the rout a few minutes later. Town failed to clear a corner, Goodison ran unchallenged down the left. and crossed to Curran who had been left unmarked in centre. Curran volleyed the ball to give Conlan no chance.

After the break Town once again looked dangerous going forward and Daniels had to make good saves from Proudlock and substitute Danny North.

It was Tranmere once more who added another goal when Shuker directed the ball onto the head of Edds.

Town had plenty of chances but failed to take them, and poor defending let them down at the other end.
