Stick With Newell

INSANITY,as Einstein once said, is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. Those suggesting that Town manager Mike Newell should be sacked, ought to consider what has happened to his predecessors when they were first appointed.

Since the sacking of Alan Buckley in 2000 every manager except Russell Slade and Newell himself have been deemed failures by the various GTFC boards. Replacing managers is a very expensive operation and the past decade has shown that changing the man at the helm has had very little immediate effect. Even Russell Slade had a comparatively poor start before turning things around, but everyone else in truth has been little better than their predecessors.

The lessons of those managerial changes is that we'd have been far better investing the money which was spent sacking Town bosses on strengthening the side. I wonder where we would be now if Paul Groves had stayed at Blundell Park? Or Lennie Lawrence? Or even Alan Buckley? Could we in truth say that we'd be in a better position than where we are now.

So give Newell at least the whole of this season to turn things around. He hasn't even had a chance to play the side that he built up during the summer. It would be insanity indeed to contemplate getting yet another manager. All Grimsby's successful periods in the recent past have been built around a stable management team and playing side. The corollary to Einstein's statement is that it is perfectly sane to do a similar thing and have a reasonable expectation of getting the same result.

  • Having been at the England game lat night, I found it very enjoyable, and was able to see some of the finest players in the land on display. Although the atmosphere was excellent though I'd swap it any day to have been in the Pontoon on one of the big cup nights, or some of the must-win league games at the end of seasons. In recent years the night that we beat Lincoln to get to the play-offs or most of the home games at the end of last season, all come to mind. Daft as it is I'd probably swap the win and qualification to South Africa for three points against Hereford on Saturday!

England games have been good recently, but I find it hard to adapt to supporting a team which is expected to win every game. I don't think I could ever support any of the Big Four. I instinctively support the underdogs, the smaller, unfashionable teams or players. I've never been a fan of top teams or players in all the other sports I enjoy (although I'm hoping that Andy Murray will prove one day to be an exception to this rule!). I believe that the highs when a small team wins are far more substantial than they are when a bigger fish is triumphant. Tell saying that to your average Man Utd supporter though and they will laugh in your face,

  • Finally FIFA have opened a can of worms with the decision to ban Chelsea from transfer dealings. The practice seems to be so commonplace that to apply the rule consistently might see so many clubs suffering that the whole transfer market could break down. Are they going to apply the rule consistently at all leagues across Europe? It would have been far better to announce an amnesty and say that all future transgressions could result in a ban, rather than picking on one high profile club with no though as to the eventual consequences of their actions. But have they the resources to investigate every case? I doubt it.
