Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Slade Would Return

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 03/11/2009

FORMER Town boss Russell Slade has become another challenger for the vacant managerial role at Blundell Park after saying that he would consider returning to his former job. Slade, who was dismissed by Brighton this week, is Grimsby's only successful manager in the last decade.

Speaking to the Grimsby Telegraph, Slade said: "I have to work again and who knows what can happen? If there is an opportunity at Grimsby again I wouldn't rule it out."

"I have good memories of my time there and we went close to promotion before I left.

Slade touched upon his controversial exit, where he appeared to have arranged to move to Yeovil whilst still employed by the Mariners, and refused to sign a new contract with Town despite having verbally said he would many times.

"It didn't end that well when I left but I had a good relationship with the chairman during my time there, " said Slade.

But if Town chairman John Fenty is willing to forgive Slade, then the free agent is willing to talk to the Mariners.

"I'd certainly be willing to talk with the club, though, if that's what they wanted. I'm out of work and need to be back in quickly because that's what I love doing."

The timing could not be better for Slade, as the GTFC board are starting now to look seriously at the applications they have received and produce a short list.

Current caretaker boss Neil Woods has been given two games so far, but has yet to secure a first win - however there has been some improvement in performances and Grimsby picked up a morale-boosting point on Friday night against Accrington in the 95th minute.

Grim Rob Says It would be madness not to consider Russell Slade for the job. He did well when he was here last time, brought some great players to the club, and who wouldn't listen to a better job offer if they were approached?
