Altringham v Grimsby Preview

By: Alex Green
Date: 24/09/2010

SO we have another fun game to attend. Well I say fun what I mean is we have another match to waste money on to watch uninspiring football and at the end we shrug our shoulders and go home because its what we expect.

Their History

Formed initially as Broadheath F.C. in 1891 the club changed to its current name in 1903. The club really didn't have much success for the majority of its existence, playing out their games in the Cheshire Leagues. Being on the outskirts of Manchester having to compete with both Manchester clubs as well as those which sit on the outskirts of the town, the Merseyside clubs and in the midst of Rugby League territory, the club struggles to attract fans. The Robins were founder members of the Northern Premier League in 1969 before been promoted to the conference in 1979. The club as a whole was very successful in this period they were again one of the founder members of the Conference and won it two seasons in a row only to be denied promotion to the football league proper due to the voting system, which was in place at the time. The club avoided relegation in 2006 when Scarborough and Canvey Island were naughty boys and were deducted enough points to save Altrincham from their points deduction of 18. In other news the Robins have Australian Cricket Captain and all round moaning little Aussie Ricky Ponting as a major shareholder due to associations with the club's current chairman.

This Season

The Robins have had the worst of starts to the season. Currently rooted to the bottom of the league the club have managed just one victory in the opening ten matches and have yet to pick up any points away from home. A 2-0 win on Tuesday night against Barrow has been the club's only victory while a 2-2 draw with Darlington was the only other point the club has picked up so far. The team’s defeats have included 5-0 to Eastbourne, 3-0 to York, 4-0 to Mansfield and 2-0 to Gateshead, all helping the club to the worst goal difference currently in the league of -16. So what should we expect a 3-0 defeat?

Key Player: Michael Twiss

When at Morecambe the former Manchester United and Sheffield United midfielder ripped the Conference a part sending Morecambe up to the Football League. His performances were instrumental not just in the Conference but also in the football league too wining many admirers and been touted by clubs higher up the league. Twiss decided to stay on at Morecambe citing a need to stay in Lancashire as a reason for the decision. Twiss was released in June this year by the club after 6 years of service and after a short spell at Stalybridge Celtic Twiss has now moved on to Altrincham where he hopes to make the same sort of impact he did for Morecambe.

Prediction

The Mariners are in huge trouble right now after 10 games the club have barely put a passable performance together and anything but a victory on Saturday will have Woods very close to the annual sacking.
