Hayes v Grimsby Preview

By: Alex Green
Date: 12/11/2010

THE Mariners travel to the boroughs of London in the hope of gaining their first win in over a month. Town's winless run is starting to stretch out a little too long for most but with a cluster of games against those round and below us ready to fill up November, Woods will be looking at a push up the table and performances able to silence the critics.

  • Position: 22nd
  • Nickname: United
  • Manager: Garry Haylock
  • Current Top Goalscorers: Bradley Pritchard, Ben Wright (5)
  • Current League Form: LWWLLL

    Their History...

"Hayes & Yeading merged, manager Haylock said we will be in Conf Premier within two years, everyone laughed, he proved everyone wrong."

In 2007 Hayes and Yeading were merged to form a larger team, which now sits, just north of Heathrow Airport. Though Yeading never appeared in non-league at this height Hayes spent 6 years in the Conference before their relegation in 2002. Initially the merged outfit started out in Conference South in 2007-08 and took just 2 years for the club to get promoted via the play offs at the expense of Hampton and Richmond.

    Last Season was...

"Tough but nothing we didn't expect after being promoted against everyone's expectations (except the manager). However we held our own despite being one of the favourites to go down and despite some thumping’s (Luton away) we stayed up. Had some great results, beat Oxford home and away (only team to do that) and really surprised a lot of people."

"Good at times (e.g. Wrexham away and Oxford at home (Cambridge home and Oxford away must have been good too but I didn’t go)), bad on others (too many to mention) and absolutely terrible on one occasion (Luton away)."

    This Season Is...

Fans early season scepticism about the clubs chances of success seems to be coming to fruition. Only Forest Green and Altrincham sit below them in the table and though a win on Saturday could see them theoretically jump 6 places an appalling goal difference has put a stop to that possibility. Nevertheless some results have grounds for optimism wins away at both relegated league clubs (ourselves and Darlington) show the team can put on a performance against the so called bigger teams while a last minute defeat in the FA Cup to Wycombe suggest there is definitely cause for a midtable finish if things start to go right.

    Last Time Out... Grimsby 1 (0) - 2 (1) Hayes & Y

    Connell 90 Hand 19, Pritchard 69

Opponents Hayes and Yeading have already defeated the Mariners this season in a 2-1 win in mid August against a Grimsby team devoid of any sort of inspiration and leadership with a last minute Connell goal attempting to restore some credibility to the score.

    Key Player - Bradley Pritchard

With Ben Wright now back in Barnet it falls to the other Hayes and Yeading joint top goalscorer Bradley Pritchard to pick up the pieces currently on 5 expect a tough battle to keep him quiet come Saturday.

    The Away Trip

  • Ground Postcode: UB3 2LE

Church Road is certainly one of those grounds you looked at in the summer and thought. "Are we really going to places like this?" Mostly uncovered the ground is nothing more than a few concrete steps one side fully covered and opposite a small seated main stand. Attendances have been averaging anything from 265 (2007-08) to 620 last season so expect plenty of legroom. Segregation isn’t always necessary at games but with our unfortunate reputation be prepared to be stuck in the open non-sheltered Church Road Terrace (be prepared to get wet!) The club's Clubhouse called the Ferdinand Suite is open to away fans if not the Adam and Eve pub is a ten-minute walk from the ground. There is a Car park at the ground, which holds about 300 cars and costs £1 Otherwise its street parking if that gets full.

Train wise the nearest station Hayes and Hartlington Station is served by London Paddington if you’re coming from the smoke as they say or Reading if you’re lost.

  • Food, ATM’s etc are about a ten-minute walk from the ground, if you come from the station you’ll walk right through the town centre. If leaving the ground turn right and walk down Church Road and take the first left at the roundabout onto Botwell Lane a Cash Convertors is on the right of the street at the junction and a NatWest across from it, that’s the town centre.

  • Seating prices: Adults £14, Concessions £9

  • Terrace prices: Adults £12, Concessions £8

    Prediction

Hayes and Yeading 1-1 Grimsby Town
