Mariner vs. Food

Now the famous Black and White of Grimsby Town have super eater Adam Richman!

Most of us have sat in our homes drooling and sometimes almost vomiting as American food lover Adam Richman devours some of the States' most outrageous eating challenges on Dave's well loved TV show "Man vs. Food", but what was more surprising than Mr Richman's appetite was his announcement recently that he is a Grimsby Town fan? The lovable New Yorker seems to have now cemented himself as the clubs most famous supporter in a week where most Town fans rattled on and whinged about the seemingly "plastic" following that were bolstering the Mariners following at Wembley.

For those of you who thought it was a hoax or a random well wishing tweet, Richman appeared on BBC Radio 5 live in their build up to the Fa Trophy Final at Wembley. He was joined by Wrexham fan and former Premier League player Robbie Savage, and went into detail the reason why he has become a Mariners fan, citing a lengthy conversation he had on a flight with a Town fan on a flight back from the UK. He was told in his own words a "compelling story" about the club which he was also informed came from a Town which served up the best Fish and Chips in England. Richman added that after the flight he began to look The Mariners up on the Internet, and the rest it seems is history. When asked on the show about Town he even passed comment at the fact he couldn't understand why an effective strike partnership in Hearn and Elding was broken up over the summer, but went on to say that he is glad that Hearn is almost back from injury.

Town probably have more celebrity followers than most people realise. Thomas Turgoose who plays Shaun in This is England appeared on Soccer AM in 2007 wearing GTFC shirt, where as other Grimbarian natives such as Snooker player Dean Reynolds, BBC weather girl Keeley Donovan and X-Factor contestant Ella Henderson. So what, I hear you say? Most clubs are bound to have celebrity followers, but in the case of Adam Richman its nice to know that people from around the world maybe compelled to take an interest in a club who Richman described himself as "plucky underdogs".

What does it mean for GTFC? Probably nothing, but certain celebrities often use their love for their clubs in their every day persona. That doesn't mean to say Richman will sport a Mariners shirt on his future shows or paint his face black and white for TV interviews, but I'm sure if Richman ever feels the urge to turn out on Blundell Park on a Saturday afternoon, he will find a warm welcome, a few cold pints the biggest helping of Fish, Chips and mushy peas he has ever seen in his life, and fingers crossed 3 points on the field...but being a Town fan he will realise the last isn't a formality. I await the day we hear "Man Vs Food, Man Vs Food" chants coming from the Pontoon and look over to see Adam Richman in his Hearn shirt tucking into a pie whilst chanting "Sing when your fishing". Man won!
