Three Strikers, Three Goals, Three Points

GRIMSBY'S purple patch continued with a resounding 3-0 win at Aldershot which lifted the Mariners to second place in the table. Two early goals from strikers Lenell John-Lewis and Ross Hannah saw Town race into an early lead after 10 minutes, and they could have gone three goals up had a Craig Disley effort not been disallowed.

Scott Neilson started the game on fire and the first goal came from a run of his down the right and a cross for John-Lewis to power into the net. The second came for a well flighted Hatton free kick which flicked off the top of Ross Hannah's head and sailed past the Aldershot 'keeper.

The turning point in the match came after around half an hour when McLaughlin made a reckless challenge in the box and the ref awarded a penalty. The Gods did not favour Aldershot as McKeown made a good save to deny former Woking striker Brett Williams from the spot. McKeown than made two more saves to keep Town's lead intact at the break.

The home side could feel slightly aggrieved at the break. They had had much of the possession and chances, including a penalty, but had nothing to show for it. Town had converted most of their chances and one more goal would probably win the game.

Liam Hearn came on for Hannah at half time and soon added a bizarre third goal. A cross shot appeared to be going wide and was left by the Aldershot 'keeper who was a little off his line. However it looped in the wind towards the far post and struck the inside of the woodwork, bounced straight across the goal and landed in the far side of the net.

Both sides had chances after that but the game was effectively won but Town stayed solid to the end determined to walk away with three points and a clean sheet. The win lifts Town up to second in a very congested table, seven points behind Cambridge who they play next at Blundell Park on Tuesday night.

Town played three strikers in the game who all found the net. Man of the match however was 'keeper James McKeown who kept Grimsby in the game when the score was 2-0.
