Southwell Comes to the Rescue

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 11/12/2013

DAYLE Southwell once proved his value to the squad with a last gasp equaliser at Blundell Park last night against Welling. The young striker last week scored a hattrick to secure Grimsby's passage in the FA Trophy in a tricky replay at Coalville, but this time he came off the bench to grab a point for Town.

Welling had taken an early lead in the game when Joe Healy hooked a loose ball in the box past McKeown. The visitors then set their stall out to defend their advantage and try and get a repeat of the 1-0 defeat to Grimsby in the away match back in August.

Grimsby pressed and pressed for an equaliser, but the closest they came when a long free kick hit the post and Pearson missed the follow up when the bal bounced back into play.

The equaliser came from a long throw in the 96th minute. McKeown came up for the throw and it was launched into the box eventually fell to Southwell at close range who gleefully hammered it in the net, in what proved to be the last kick of the game.

  • Grimsby have agreed with Barnet that if Saturday's FA Trophy tie at the Hive ends in a draw then the match will go into extra time then and there. A replay will still be required if the scoreline is still level after 120 minutes. This has been done to minimise the chances of a reply and the ensuing fixture congestion it would cause for both clubs.

  • Grimsby's game with Huddersfield has not been chosen as a televised game so remains at 3pm on January 5th at Blundell Park.
