Town Beat Bogey Side

GRIMSBY overcame an early goal to beat Kidderminster with an impressive team performance at Blundell Park last night. It means the Mariners leapfrogged above Harriers into third place in the Conference and extended their unbeaten run to 13 games.

It was the first time Town had beaten Kidderminster at non-league level after seven matches without a win against their biggest "bogey" side in the division.

Kidderminster started brightly and had three chances in the opening 5 minutes. It was no surprise when the visitors took the lead after 7 minutes when Gash's speculative shot took a big deflection off Pearson and looped over McKeown.

But Town were soon level. Within 10 minutes Grimsby had a spell of pressure and a Hatton long throw was nodded on to Disley who hit the ball in the net from close range. It was against the run of play but Town regained the initiative by equalising.

Grimsby were ahead ten minutes later when Neilson latched on to a loose ball in the box and smashed it past Lewis.

Both teams created chances in the remainder of an exciting first half, and Hannah should have put Grimsby 3-1 up when he latched on to a defensive mix-up by Kiddie, rounded the 'keeper but shot into the side netting from a narrow angle.

The second half started with a bang with two outrageous scoring attempts by Town. Neilson tried to chip the 'keeper than Hannah forced a save from a 40 yard shot.

Town made it 3-1 after a long spell of Kidderminster pressure when a long ball out was flicked into the path of Neilson who chipped it over the 'keeper with the outside of his boot for his second goal.

Grimsby finished strongly and Ross Hannah missed another chance in front of goal after a superb cross by Thomas just before the 90 minute mark.

McKeown made a flying late save to ensure that Grimsby won 3-1 and went third in the table.

It was an excellent game of football between two strong sides, but Grimsby looked a class above Kidderminster. Kidderminster retained the ball well, but Town defended excellently, and created chances throughout the game. Scott Neilson was in vintage form, and stood out in a excellent team performance.

Town have a week off now before they take on Lincoln away, one of the few games in the calendar which means more than just three points.
