Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Wembley, and Beyond

ANYONE travelling to Barnet's new ground by tube from Central London would have passed Wembley Stadium, which is where the Mariners sights are firmly focused after knocking out Barnet in the FA Trophy to complete the second win over Edgar David's side in a few weeks.

Should Town avoid Luton and Cambridge in the draw there is a good chance of progressing a step closer to Wembley, with plenty of non-Skrill Premier teams in the tournament as well it is a competition Grimsby could go deep into.

But thanks to a late goal by super-sub Dayle Southwell that the Mariners got another cup win under their belts. Southwell came on in the 83rd minute and within two minutes the 20-year-old had bagged the winner with a superb finish.

Town, playing 4-5-1, had led through an early Andy Cook goal, a header from a McLaughlin corner, and were the best side in the first half. Barnet improved in the second half and deservedly equalised. It looked like the home side were the more likely to win the game until Southwell came on and raced away, finishing superbly with just a few minutes left.

McKeown was man of the match for Grimsby after keeping Town in the tie with a series of saves. However it could have been a very different story when Barnet hit the inside of the post deep in injury rime.

The Mariners have now gone 12 games unbeaten in all competitions.

The draw takes place on Monday morning. Meanwhile Kidderminster and Salisbury both lost in the league to complete a good day for Town.
