Town Can Hold Their Heads High

GRIMSBY'S impressive cup run is over and the Mariners have just league games to concentrate on until the end of the season. Town reached the Third Round of the FA Cup, and were unfortunate to lose to Huddersfield in that competition. Yesterday they fell at the semi final stage to Cambridge in the FA Trophy,
It's been an adventure that started in October when Rushall Olympic were dispatched 3-0 at Blundell Park. Town have gone on to play 12 cup games this season and only lost 2 of them - Cambridge away and Huddersfield at home.
The Mariners were well beaten in 3 out of the 4 halves of the two games in the FA Trophy semi final, but their late goal at Cambridge gave them hope going into the return match at Blundell Park. When Cambridge took the lead through Ryan Bird it looked like an easy win for United, who once again dominated the game. But the Mariners once again gave themselves hope when Scott Neilson scored an undeserved lead just before half-time.
Town came out in the second half and finally showed what they were capable of. The Mariners totally dominated the second period, but were unable to get the goal that would have taken the tie to extra time.
Cambridge have an apparently "easy" final against Gosport at Wembley, while Grimsby at least have no distraction of the FA Trophy to contend with, and the players and management can concentrate on a fixture list that at least is settled, once the unassigned games have been given dates,
Grimsby are soon back in action when they take on third bottom Southport at Haig Avenue on Tuesday night, a match they need to win to gain ground on the teams above them. The Mariners are currently eight in the Skrill Premier League, but have 5 or 6 games in hand on all of the five teams above them.
