1-0 to the Mariners

GRIMSBY climbed to a morale-boosting third place in the Conference following another 1-0 win last night at Wrexham. The game followed a similar pattern to other recent matches: a good start, an early Grimsby goal from a midfielder, a solid defence and ultimately another clean sheet.
McLaughlin was one of four changes for Town, playing on the left side of midfield, the other midfield change being Andi Thanoj who replaced the suspended Scott Kerr in the middle of the park. Lenell John-Lewis and Ross Hannah provided a complete change of strike partnership up front for the Mariners, with Andy Cook not even making the bench for the trip to North Wales.
It proved to be an inspired switch by Paul Hurst as Sam Hatton picked up a early foraging run by McLaughlin into the box, and the Town midfielder slotted it past the Wrexham 'keeper to put Grimsby in front.
Grimsby went on to dominate the first half, and McKeown's only save of note came when he made a save with his legs to deny Johnny Hunt..
Wrexham came into the game more in the second half and there were a couple of heart-stopping goalmouth scrambles, but Town held on for another priceless three points.
Town have the third of three away games when they travel to Kidderminster on Saturday, which on paper looked the hardest of the trio, but with the confidence of two wins under their belts, Grimsby will approach the game with less nervousness than they might otherwise have shown.
The worry remains the lack of goals. Grimsby have scored exactly 1 goal in 9 of the last 11 games. The strikers in general are not finding the net, but the defence are fortunately by and large doing their job and Grimsby are proving a hard team to beat - hopefully a good omen if Town reach the play-offs.
